It's obvious that a) graphic realisation of language is arbitrary, and b) there are phonetic rules that define how the phonetic realisation of a certain grapheme changes with it's position changeing. If "Ghoti" were a word (in fact it is a word - it just has no semantic reference yet), it would be pronounced "gou-tay" or something like that. Simply because the "value" of an entitiy changes with its position in the system. Think about it.
